MSc in Physics, Fernando has more than 25 years of new business launch leadership across business development, internationalization and M&A, both as an entrepreneur (he has founded 5 companies so far) as well as in global management position in multinational companies such as Ericsson or Hewlett Packard. Fernando is also partner of Hasten Ventures and member of the board of various technology and biotech firms such as Osatek SA., Irisbond SL., Prospero Biosciences SL. or Nito Inc.

Veronique Calleja (PhD)

Chief Scientific Officer, CSO

She obtained her PhD in 1999 in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Nice–Sophia Antipolis (INSERM U145) in France. She then spent over two decades (1999–2021) working within academic research environments affiliated with Cancer Research UK in London. She began her postdoctoral work at the London Research Institute and Imperial College London, where she studied the RAS/PI3K/Akt signalling pathway in cancer. During her time at the Cell Biophysics Laboratory at the London Research Institute, she applied FRET-FLIM quantitative imaging techniques to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying PDK1 and Akt interaction, structure, and function. In 2011, she was invited to join the Editorial Advisory Board of the Biochemical Journal, contributing to the Signal Knowledge Environment section. In 2016, she was appointed Principal Laboratory Research Scientist in the laboratory of Prof. Peter Parker at the Francis Crick Institute in London, where she investigated oncogenic mutations of PKCα using genetically engineered mouse models. Since 2021, she has been serving as Chief Scientific Officer at HAWK Biosystems, leading scientific innovation and research development.

James Miles (PhD)

James completed an industrial cotutelle PhD between HAWK Biosystems, the University of the Basque Country, and the University of Bordeaux, focusing on the evaluation of PD-1/PD-L1 as a prognostic biomarker across solid tumours. He was awarded his PhD in 2022. He has been involved in the development of QF-Pro® since 2015, contributing across hardware, software, and assay development. Following his doctoral studies, he remained with HAWK Biosystems and transitioned into product-focused roles. As Chief Product Officer, he is responsible for the QF-Pro® product portfolio, including the Violet 3.0 imaging platform, QF-Pro® software, and reagent kits, supporting the continued development and application of the technology.

Aitor Hormaeche

Aitor holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Administration, with a specialisation in Financial Management, from the University of the Basque Country. He has developed his professional career in finance, gaining experience in financial management and business support, working closely with CEOs, mainly in industrial and engineering environments. His approach combines continuous improvement, a strong focus on people and collaboration across the organisation, with technology and efficiency as key drivers for building effective structures and processes that support sustainable growth. At HAWK Biosystems, Aitor is responsible for strengthening the company’s financial and organisational structure and supporting its development into its next stage of growth.

Elena Castellano (PhD)

Elena holds a PhD in Molecular Bioscience from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and completed her doctoral research at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), focusing on the role of the tumor microenvironment in cancer progression and metastatic dissemination. She trained in oncology research environments at NYU Langone Health (New York) and the Medical Research Council (London). After completing a Master’s degree in Medical Affairs to transition into industry, Elena joined HAWK Biosystems in 2024 and currently leads the Life Science Business Unit. She is responsible for the strategic growth, market positioning, and global expansion of QF-Pro® Technology across research and biopharmaceutical sectors, overseeing international business development and strategic partnerships to advance translational research and companion diagnostic (CDx) biomarker development.

Juan Gumuzio (PhD)

Dr Juan Gumuzio obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of the Basque Country. His research has focused on breast cancer stem cell biology and 3D cell culture applications for drug development against cancer. He has gained experience in R&D and customer project management at the biotechnology start-up Stemtek Therapeutics. He has been a project manager and advisor at BIOEF (Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research).

Margarita Arenas

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs Manager

Margarita Arenas joined HAWK Biosystems in mid-2024. She brings extensive experience as Regulatory Compliance and Quality Manager in medical device manufacturing companies in the Basque Country and Colombia. Margarita specialises in Medical Device Regulation, with a focus on MDR and IVDR, from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. She graduated cum laude in Law from Universidad Santo Tomás de Bucaramanga and recently completed her master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Management (MBAe3) at University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where she received a mention of excellence. Joining HAWK Biosystems, Margarita stated "I am thrilled to join HAWK at such a pivotal time, marked by the achievement of ISO 13485, UKCA, and CE certifications, essential for launching our product into the market. It is a privilege to contribute to this significant step for the company".

Jose María Gracia

Jose Maria has a degree in Industrial Engineering. He has 25 years of experience working in engineering departments, as an employee in manufacturing environments (ABB Trafo), installation engineering (Lantek) or as head of the engineering department (Sercoin - a company dedicated to the maintenance and installation of fire protection). He also worked as a freelancer creating an architectural and engineering company for building installations for 10 years. In 2022 he joins the HAWK team for the industrialisation development of the Violet 3.0 microscope.

Killian O’Sullivan

Product Manager - Life Sciences

Killian earned his bachelor’s degree in Zoology at University College Cork, Ireland. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a strong interest in biotechnology and went on to complete a research master’s in Bio-Inspired Innovation at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. There, he carried out projects and internships across a range of areas, from recombinant protein expression to the industrial cultivation of microalgae. After graduating in 2024, Killian relocated to the Basque Country and joined HAWK Biosystems as a Laboratory Technician in Operations. He later transitioned into a product-focused role and now works as Product Manager. In this position, he combines his technical background with customer-facing experience to support product demonstrations, provide post-sales support, and contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the company’s product line.

After completing her undergraduate studies in Italy, Flavia earned a PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona in 2023. Driven by a passion for understanding the molecular mechanisms behind cancer, her research focused on protein synthesis regulation and its role in tumor development and drug resistance. After a year as a postdoctoral researcher, Flavia realized that what she enjoyed most was connecting with people, fostering collaborations, and helping scientific ideas move forward. In July 2026, she joined HAWK Biosystems in Research Partnership, where she combines her scientific background with her enthusiasm for building meaningful relationships. She works closely with academic and industry partners to create productive collaborations and ensure that researchers have a smooth and rewarding experience working with HAWK.

Cecilia García

Cecilia holds a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from the Universidad de Oviedo and a Master's degree in Pharmacology from the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), building a solid interdisciplinary foundation across the life sciences and pharmaceutical development. Cecilia joined HAWK Biosystems as Marketing Assistant within the Business Development team. She supports the commercial expansion of QF-Pro® Technology by identifying and prospecting new biopharmaceutical partners and contributing to the development of the global distributor network, with a focus on companion diagnostic (CDx) biomarker development and precision medicine applications.

Laura Camacho (PhD)

Laura Camacho obtained her PhD in 2011 in Cell Biology from the Complutense University in Madrid, where she worked on developing mice models of breast cancer. She moved to the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston (Texas, USA) to work as a post-doc in the Breast Cancer Centre, where she worked on projects involving exosomes and the effect of obesity in breast cancer. After 4.5 years she came back to Spain to join the Cancer Cell Signalling and Metabolism Lab in CIC bioGUNE to work on a project in collaboration with the sphingolipid metabolism lab in the University of the Basque Country. After more than 15 years working on cancer research in academia, in 2023 she jumped to industry, joining the scientific department at HAWK Biosystems.

Markel Rementeria

Markel, a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduate from the University of the Basque Country, pursued a master’s in Research, Development, Control, and Innovation of Medicines at the University of Granada. During this time, he served as a Scientific Researcher at GENYO, an oncology research centre, focusing on developing advanced therapies for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), known as the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer. While working at HAWK Biosystems as a Scientist, he completed an Executive MBA in Management of Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Medical Device Companies at CESIF, further strengthening his expertise in business strategy and management within the life sciences sector. He currently serves as Product Manager – Diagnostics at HAWK Biosystems, combining scientific expertise and strategic insight to drive product innovation and portfolio growth in the diagnostics field.

Cristina Cacho (PhD)

Cristina has over 10 years of experience in cell signalling and fluorescence microscopy, gained across different research institutes within Spain and the UK. She obtained her PhD in 2020, from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, in Spain. In December 2022, she joined HAWK as a Senior Scientist, contributing to the development of QF-Pro® reagents and the discovery of novel immune-oncology biomarkers. Since 2025, she works as an Application Scientist at HAWK, providing technical support to clients, conducting proof-of-concept studies, and representing the company at scientific events.

Olatz Larrañaga

Olatz holds a degree in Biology from the University of Oviedo and has completed two master’s degrees: one in Advanced Microbiology at the University of Barcelona and another in Pharmacology at the University of the Basque Country. She has gained experience in both industry and research, working in microbiological quality control and clinical microbiology laboratories, as well as conducting research in primary healthcare. Her career has combined strong academic training with hands-on laboratory and quality experience, evolving from microbiology into pharmacology and biomedical research. Olatz is currently a Research Associate in the Operations Department at HAWK Biosystems. In this role, she contributes her laboratory and quality expertise to the management and development of new projects and the design and execution of clinical validation studies, supporting the advancement and certification of the QF-Pro® platform.

Martine Mendy

Martine is a Clinical and Biomedical Laboratory Technician. She later completed a qualification in Anatomical Pathology and Cytodiagnosis at Jesuitas Indautxu. She currently works at HAWK Biosystems, where she applies advanced laboratory techniques and supports biotechnology research.

Olatz Vadillo

Olatz is a clinical and biomedical laboratory technician who completed her degree at Colegio Zabalburu and carried out her internship at Hospital de Cruces. She subsequently obtained her qualification as an anatomical pathology and cytodiagnosis technician at Colegio Jesuitas, the same programme during which she completed her first-year internship at Hospital de Basurto and her second-year internship at HAWK Biosystems, where she now works as a laboratory technician, applying her expertise and contributing to both the Operations and Applications departments.

Jon Agüero

Jon, a mechanical engineer by training, has expanded his self-taught knowledge in fields such as electronics, software and mechanical manufacturing. His work experience spans from prototype manufacturing, projects in computer vision and machine learning, industrial automation, and research and development in diverse sectors such as steelmaking or toy manufacturing. When joining the team, he stated “What I like about this project, in addition to its social impact, is that I'm involved in the product development from its inception to its market release, which I find very enriching".

Baterdene Batmunkh

Bat has a degree in Informatics Engineering and a master's degree in Computational Engineering and Intelligent Systems from the University of the Basque Country. During his degrees, he focused on searching and elaborating different artificial intelligence models. Bat joined HAWK Biosystems in 2022 as a software engineer. Bat says, “I am glad to be working in HAWK, as I enrich my knowledge and I gain more experience working over a complete project taking into consideration every area".

Daniel Alba

Daniel holds vocational degrees in Telecommunications Systems and in Web and Multiplatform Application Development, building a technical foundation across software development and system deployment. He has worked on projects involving requirements engineering tools, blockchain infrastructures, and custom software development, with a particular focus on Python automation. Daniel joined the project motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a solution that can grow and ultimately support and help many people.

Rubi holds an Administration and Finance degree obtained in the Basque Country and a Hotel Management degree obtained in Peru. She has been working with solid experience in the hospitality industry, customer service, and administrative management. Throughout her career, she has expanded her knowledge in fields such as event organization, cash control, internal audit, accounting, and resource administration. She is delighted to work for HAWK Biosystems and to be part of this innovative company with a great leadership team focused on breakthrough challenges. Prof. Dr. Paul Hofman is Professor of Pathology at the University Côte d’Azur, Nice France. He graduated in Nice and in Paris. He was a fellow in Pathology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School, Boston) and at the Max Planck Institut (Tubingen, Germany). He was awarded a PhD in Cell Biology (University of Montpellier, France). He is the Head of the Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Louis Pasteur Hospital, Nice. He is the Director of the University Hospital Federation, FHU OncoAge and of the Hospital-related Biobank. He is the Director of the MSc Biobanks and Complex Data Management at the University Côte d’Azur. He is the Director of the Research Team 4 aiming on determining the spectrum of genetic, non-genetic, and cellular events in lung cancer to better characterize the underlying mechanisms associated with non-therapeutic response. He is the Director of the Liquid Biopsy Center in Nice which has been selected to be a European Expert Center in LBx. He is member of the Royal Academy of Medicine (Brussels) Belgium and an executive board member of the European Liquid Biopsy Society. He is the chair of the Pulmonary Pathology Working Group of the European Society of Pathology. He is member of the Pathology Working group of the IASLC and the co-chair of the Molecular Pathology Working Group at the IASLC. Since May 2023 he is the new Director of the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire RespirERA in Nice.

Prof. Erick J Dufourc holder of PhD in Biophysics from the University of Ottawa/National Research Council, Canada. 1998 he was among the founders of the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB). In 2006 he created and directed the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of Membranes and Nanoobjects (CBMN), an interdisciplinary institute gathering 200 chemists, physicists and biologists in Bordeaux. Currently is the Deputy Scientific Director of Institut de Chimie CNRS – Paris France.

Prof. Alfredo Carrato, MD and PhD Head of the Medical Oncology Unit at the Hospital Universitario Ramon y Cajal (Madrid, Spain). His work is developed in the field of the clinical and basic research, especially in the area of digestive tract tumours (TTD), being a prominent member of the Spanish Group for Research in TTD with more than 200 publications. He is president of the Spanish Association for Research on Cancer (ASEICA).

Starting in the field of Chemistry and obtaining a BSc in 1991 from Uppsala University, Ola Söderberg then moved on to Biochemistry and obtained his PhD in 1997 in the Department of Pathology on “Regulation of Growth, Differentiation and Survival of B-Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Cells”. After completing several placements as post-doctoral researcher at IPATIMUP (Porto, Portugal) and Linköping University (Sweden) he returned to Uppsala in 2001. There, he was appointed Associate Professor in 2007 and then Senior Lecturer in 2013. In 2016 he became Professor in Molecular Proteomics and moved in 2017 to the department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences at Uppsala University, where he is now Professor in Pharmaceutical Cell Biology. His research mainly focuses on the development of new methods for visualization of protein activity in single cells. He is author of more than 100 scientific papers and inventor of 6 patents among them several versions of proximity ligation assay (PLA).

Prof. Peter J Parker,

Professor Peter Parker was awarded a DPhil in Biochemistry from Oxford in 1979. Following post-doctoral fellowships, and tenure-track appointment, he became a Principal Scientist at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (to become Cancer Research UK) in 1990, and has held a joint appointment with King’s College London since 2006. His research work in cancer, along with the co-founding of companies, has led to broad interests and expertise in the dysregulation of cellular controls, in drug discovery and in biomarkers pertinent to oncology. He was elected to the European Molecular Biology Organisation in 1997, to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000, he was awarded the Morton Prize in 2004, elected to the Royal Society in 2006 and elected to the European Academy of Cancer Sciences in 2011. Peter is currently Director of the CRUK KHP Cancer Centre at King’s College London and is a Senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute.
